Police begin issuing ‘stop receipts’ to some pedestrians

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – In response to new statewide legislation called the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act, law enforcement agencies across the state and in Champaign County, under certain circumstances, have begun issuing “stop receipts” to pedestrians who are searched or frisked by police. The stop receipts are one part of a greater effort to collect data on pedestrian stops around the state, and those receipts will include the reason for the stop and the officer’s name and badge number. The new law describes the limited circumstances under which police are required to issue a stop receipt to a pedestrian. [...]

Partner agency honors U. of I. Police staff

URBANA — Two University of Illinois Police officers and a telecommunicator, among others, were honored on Wednesday by the Urbana Police Department, underscoring the cooperation between Champaign County law enforcement agencies as a key to keeping the community safer. Officer Krissie Garcia and telecommunicator Kenny Costa received certificates of appreciation from the Urbana Police Department for their roles in tracking and detaining a suspect who had just robbed an Urbana bank. U. of I. Police remind students of medical amnesty

URBANA – The University of Illinois Police Department is reminding students of protections for those who call for medical help when someone’s had too much to drink. State legislators passed a law in 2015, and new rules go into effect on June 1 which protect underage drinkers from legal trouble when they call 911 for someone in need of medical assistance. U. of I. Police Chief Jeff Christensen said he hopes the new state law will remove students’ apprehension toward calling 911 when they have been drinking alcohol.
