UIPD reminds students of medical amnesty, alcohol safety
URBANA — With a new school year under way, the University of Illinois Police Department is reminding students and others of the university’s and the state of Illinois’ medical amnesty procedures, which protect students from getting in trouble when they call 911 to help someone in need. Fear of receiving an underage drinking ticket may be a deterrent for some students to call for police or medical help when they or someone they know is in need. A new state law which went into effect last year protects students from receiving a drinking ticket if they call 911 during an [...]
Three new officers welcomed to campus
URBANA – The University of Illinois Police Department is welcoming three new police officers who took their oaths of office Thursday. The new officers all have previous law enforcement experience and will be in the department’s field training program immediately, meaning community members may see them out and about right away. Officer Ty Ledbetter comes to the University of Illinois Police Department after 11 years with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office where he was most recently a K-9 deputy. Ledbetter also worked part-time as an Arthur Police officer. Officer Drew Osterholt will be familiar with campus policing after working at [...]

The evaluators last reviewed the University of Illinois Police Department in 2012 and gave the department their highest (Tier II) accreditation level. At the time, the University of Illinois Police Department was the only campus department in the state which attained the Tier II status, and that [...]

The position is paid and is excellent training for students looking to enter criminal justice as a career – although an interest in a law enforcement career is by no means required for the job. “While patrolling campus they are extra eyes and ears for police and other first responders,” said [...]
