UIPD warns community about recent phone scams
URBANA, Ill. – Campus community members should be on high alert when they receive calls from unknown numbers – police are aware of a number of recent incidents in which students were convinced to send thousands of dollars to scammers. In the recent string of calls, the scammer purports to be a representative of some official agency and claims that the recipient of the call is under investigation for a serious crime. The caller then claims that the recipient can resolve the investigation by paying a large amount of money to the government. In two cases reported to UIPD in [...]
Online reporting now available for theft, vandalism and lost property
URBANA, Ill. – Community members can now report on-campus incidents of theft and vandalism and any lost property without the need for face-to-face interaction. The reporting form is available on the University of Illinois Police Department website. The online reporting format has been in the works at UIPD for some time, but its launch was accelerated to provide a more convenient option for community members who are practicing “social distancing” during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Online reporting reduces the amount of face-to-face interaction required. The online reporting form is for non-emergency incidents only. Anyone who is experiencing an emergency or who is [...]
Police services remain available
URBANA, Ill. — All emergency and non-emergency services offered through the University of Illinois Police Department will be available through spring break and beyond. The department remains fully staffed at all hours of the day. Additionally, the SafeWalks service remains available for anyone who needs to travel on campus at night. Call 217-333-1216 if you need a SafeWalks escort after 9 p.m. Police said on Friday that, although some campus services may be different during the next few weeks, the safety of students, [...]
SafeWalks extends hours through Sunday morning
URBANA, Ill. — SafeWalks has temporarily extended its hours to provide free walking escorts to students, faculty and staff, beginning at 7 p.m. The extension, which makes SafeWalks available earlier than its usual 9 p.m. starting time, is scheduled through Sunday morning, when daylight saving time begins. Public safety officials extended SafeWalks hours in response to three off-campus incidents this week when students were confronted by men who displayed weapons. In two of those cases, the men made off with students’ belongings, and in the other, the offender fled before any words or property was exchanged. No students were injured [...]
