Clery Compliance Coordinator earns expert certification
URBANA, Illinois – The Division of Public Safety is congratulating Kate Kaput for receiving Clery Compliance Officer certification through the National Association of Clery Compliance Officers and Professionals (NACCOP). Kaput is the Clery Compliance Coordinator in the Division of Public Safety, and the certification adds to her credentials as an expert in compiling crime statistics and disclosing information about public safety issues to the campus community. National Night Out to bring community together
URBANA, Illinois — The Division of Public Safety has assembled a variety of public safety agencies, community groups and other service organizations for National Night Out. The event will take place Aug. 1, from 5-8 p.m., on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign south quad. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships. The event brings community members and organizations together for conversation and safety information, with the goal of promoting relationships that prevent crime and make Champaign-Urbana and campus safer. Fake computer virus
A U. of I. employee reported that she received an alert on her computer that it had a virus. The message instructed her to call a phone number to speak with an information technology representative. That representative asked for the employee's personal information, which she provided. He then directed her to purchase a gift card from a local retail store and provide the card information over the phone. The employee did so, and then reported the scam to police when she was directed to purchase more gift cards.
Sexual extortion
A U. of I. student reported that he had been the victim of a sexual extortion scam. The student accepted a friend request from an Instagram user with whom he was not familiar. The user encouraged the student to send intimate photos of himself, and then threatened to post those photos publicly unless the student paid money.
UIPD selected as Illinois CIT Department of the Year
EAST PEORIA, Illinois – The University of Illinois Police Department has been recognized as the top department in the state for responding to mental health-related emergencies. At its annual Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) conference in June, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) presented U. of I.
