University of Illinois Police arrest suspect in shooting near campus
CHAMPAIGN, Illinois — An 18-year-old Urbana man was arrested Monday morning for his role in an Oct. 18 shooting just off campus that left another person seriously injured.
Immediately following the incident near Fifth and Green streets, Champaign, UIPD officers and detectives quickly developed suspect information by obtaining eyewitness accounts and video footage provided by local citizens. The Illinois State Police assisted in gathering evidence at the scene.
Based on the investigation, UIPD detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Decoven Stephens, 18, of Urbana, and a search warrant for his residence. Both warrants were executed on October 20, 2025, with support from the Metropolitan Emergency Tactical Response Operations Team (METRO) and the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force (SCTF).
Stephens was taken into custody, and multiple items of evidence were recovered, including the handgun believed to be involved in the shooting. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and is scheduled for arraignment on October 20, 2025.
The University of Illinois Police Department extends its sincere gratitude to the community members who provided critical information, as well as to its law enforcement partners: the Champaign Police Department, Urbana Police Department, the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office. UIPD also commends the tireless efforts of its Detective Bureau and patrol officers who work daily to ensure the safety of the University campus.
This resolution was made possible through a strong community partnership, and UIPD thanks all involved for their dedication and support.
Note: Those arrested are presumed innocent until proved guilty, and formal charges may change or be dismissed as cases are adjudicated.
